The Online Course on Refugees in Palestine is a unique opportunity for participants to become acquainted with the refugee situation in Palestine, and to understand something of the nature of refugee life inside the West Bank camps. This course seeks to inform participants about the daily challenges and difficulties experienced by camp residents. Among the most severe difficulties for camp residents is the actual infrastructure of the camps themselves.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) provides educational and health services throughout Palestine. These services are also under pressure due to the scale of these services being reduced. Another challenge for refugees in the camps is the burgeoning population, as the camps cannot physically expand to cater to this increase in population.

Introduction to PalestinianĀ Refugees

Palestinian refugees are defined as ā€œpersons whose normal place of residence was Palestine during the period 1 June 1946 to 15 May 1948, and who lost both home and means of livelihood as a result of the 1948 conflict.ā€  When the UNRWA began operations in 1950, it was responding to the needs of about 750,000 Palestinian refugees. Today, some 5 million Palestinian refugees are eligible for UNRWA services.

Nearly one-third of the registered Palestinian refugees, more than 1.5Ā million individuals, live in 58 recognized refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon, the Syrian Arab Republic, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Socioeconomic conditions in the camps are generally poor, with high population density, cramped living conditions, and inadequate basic infrastructure such as roads and sewers. After the hostilities of June 1967 and the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, authorities established ten camps to accommodate a new wave of displaced persons, both refugees and non-refugees.

The remaining two-thirds of registeredĀ Palestinian refugeesĀ live in and around the cities and towns of the host countries, and in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, often in the environs of official camps. While most of UNRWAā€™s installations such as schools and health centers are located in the refugee camps, a number are outside. All of the Agencyā€™s services are available to all registered Palestinian refugees, including those who do not live in the camps.Ā

Palestinian Refugee Camps

Palestinian refugees fall under the purview of the United Nations, with the United Nations Relief and Works Agencyā€“ more commonly referred to as theĀ UNRWAā€“ supporting 19 refugee camps within the West Bank alone. These camps, such as Al Fawwar and Al Arroub, are notoriously cramped and uncomfortable. They lack basic necessities, services, and infrastructure, including hospitals and enough schools to adequately accommodate the camp populations.

These Palestinian refugee camps in the West Bank originally began as expansive tent-cities filled with people displaced after the 1948 Nakbah, however as time went on and it became clear a return would not happen anytime soon, stone structures gradually replaced tents, causing cramped, concrete quarters. Palestinian Refugee camps therefore have an exceptionally high population density, where people often experience housing shortages and overcrowding.
